With the release of the live-action Moana movie around the corner, and persistent rumors of a live-action Tangled and Hercules continuing to pop up ever so often, there's now another live-action Disney movie in development.
According to Deadline Hollywood, a live-action Gaston movie is currently being developed by Dave Callaham (Mortal Kombat, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse), who is penning the script. Lucasfilm veteran Michelle Rejwan is also on board as a producer.
It's also been reported that Kate Herron and Briony Redman (Loki, Doctor Who) wrote a previous draft of the script, indicating that the project has been in development at Disney for quite some time.
The primary antagonist of Beauty and the Beast, Gaston is physically imposing and conventionally handsome, yet deeply toxic and intensely superficial. He’s defined by his towering size, brute strength, and rugged good looks, but his personality tells a very different story.
Beneath the polished exterior lies a man driven by vanity, arrogance, and extreme self-centeredness. In that sense, Gaston stands as the ultimate example of someone who appears beautiful on the outside while being deeply ugly on the inside.
Luke Evans previously portrayed a live-action version of the character in Disney’s 2017 Beauty and the Beast, but this new project is said to be a completely separate interpretation. Evans was previously attached to a live-action Disney+ spin-off but that project never came to fruition.
According to the site, the film will have a “swashbuckling” tone to it.
Based on the box office performances of Mufasa: The Lion King (December 2024) and Lilo & Stitch (May 2025), Disney clearly sees Snow White (March 2025) as a one-off misstep rather than a warning sign that the live-action remake trend is nearing its end.
Catherine Laga'aia and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's live-action Moana is up next, set for theatrical release on July 10, 2026.
