It's been a busy summer for movies and there have, unfortunately, been some titles which have failed to live up to expectations.
The Flash was the first big flop, while many box office analysts are still scratching their heads over the disappointing performances of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One. However, while Barbie is set to be the year's undisputed box office queen, one apparent "flop" has managed to weather the storm.
During a disappointing opening weekend alongside The Flash between June 16 - 18, Elemental earned only $29.6 million. That was the worst three-day weekend start in Pixar's history, and it led to questions about whether the brand was beyond saving after Lightyear similarly underperformed.
The reason for that has widely been blamed on Disney's decision to release a number of Pixar movies on streaming, and even though there's definitely truth to that, Elemental has proven to be a movie with legs.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, it currently has a domestic total of $146.2 million which, combined with its $257.5 million from overseas, takes the movie's current global cume to $403.7 million.
While still a far cry from what many past Pixar releases have earned, this is way ahead of Lightyear's $218.8 million haul and a figure which should mean the movie at least breaks even (it may eventually turn a small profit). This is good news for Disney and Pixar alike, particularly ahead of Elemental's upcoming release in Japan.
However, we'd imagine returning Disney CEO Bob Iger still plans on making big changes to the brand in an effort to restore it to its former glory.
Elemental introduces Ember, a tough, quick-witted and fiery young woman, whose friendship with a fun, sappy, go-with-the-flow guy named Wade challenges her beliefs about the world they live in.
Directed by Peter Sohn, and featuring the voices of Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie as Ember and Wade, respectively, Elemental is still playing in theaters.
