In an article on the Actors’ Equity Association authorizing a strike against the Broadway League, the Hollywood Reporter briefly mentioned that one of the projects impacted could be a stage show based on Tangled. While Disney has not officially announced plans to adapt the 2010 animated film into a staged production, BroadwayWorld.com has confirmed that Disney Theatrical Group (aka Disney on Broadway) is exploring a stage show inspired by the movie.
This doesn't necessarily mean Tangled is headed to Broadway though. As the site notes, Disney Theatrical Group has previously developed shows for professional licensing and schools.
Produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, Tangled is loosely based on the German fairy tale "Rapunzel" in the collection of folktales published by the Brothers Grimm.
The animated musical stars Mandy Moore as Rapunzel, a spirited and determined young woman with magical long blonde hair. Yearning to leave her secluded tower where she's been locked away for years, Rapunzel, with the help of Flynn (Zachary Levi), the kingdom's most wanted bandit, embarks on to the island kingdom of Corona to see the sky lanterns.
Directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard with music by Alan Menken, Tangled earned $592.5 million globally, making it the third-highest-grossing animated film of 2010. It's currently the sixth highest-grossing Walt Disney Animation Studios movie, behind both Frozen films, Zootopia, Big Hero 6, and Moana.
Rapunzel's adventures continued in the 2012 animated short film Tangled Ever After and later in the 2017 animated television series Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure (aka Tangled: The Series).
It's worth noting that there is already a staged production of Tangled, titled Tangled: The Musical. The one-hour stage show is performed on Disney Cruise Line's Disney Magic. The abridged adaptation features three new songs written by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater.
In 2020, Disney hosted a virtual viewing of Tangled: The Musical, which you can watch on YouTube.
Disney currently has two staged shows on Broady, Aladdin and The Lion King. Frozen, another Broadway musical, is also on tour across North America. There have also been musical Broadway adaptations of Beauty and the Beast, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Tarzan, and The Little Mermaid.
In addition to Broadway musicals, Disney has also been adapting their animated musicals into live-action films. There have been rumors that Disney is developing a live-action remake of Tangled, but nothing official has been announced. There were rumors that Marvel star Florence Pugh could be the frontrunner to play Rapunzel.
