Ravensburger's Disney Lorcana officially released this week, hitting mass retailers on September 1. The new collectible trading card game has already proven to be a smash hit, selling out online and in stores almost immediately.
Following the game's launch, the German games-maker took to social media to quell the mounting discontent over the lack of supply.
The statement, which you can read below, addresses much of the frustration that has to do with scalpers snatching up much of the supply in order to resell the cards at much higher prices. While this is not necessarily a new concept, especially when it comes to collectible trading cards, it's frustrating nonetheless. People who just want to play the game can't do so unless they pay double the cost of what the cards normally retail for -- or sometimes much higher.
The TCG starter decks, which normally cost $16.99 each, are being sold with a "market price" of more than $30. Some of the big ticket launch items, like the Illumineer’s Trove gift set are selling for nearly three times the normal retail price.
"Our goal is for fans to be able to purchase and enjoy the Disney Lorcana TCG product at the suggested retail price, and we will continue to take steps to ensure a level of availability and quality that keeps the market healthy for both collectors and players," Ravensburger said.
The game maker promised a reprint of Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter -- the debut set of 204 cards -- will arrive in North America and Europe in Q1 2024. This has naturally upset many collectors as a reprint could diminish the value of this initial launch batch. Some have suggested that the reprints be designated as much, which would give more people access to the game while maintaining the value of this first batch.
The cards that comprise The First Chapter are spread across three 60-card starter decks, as well as 12-card booster packs that are sold individually or as part of a 24-pack display box. There are plans for additional booster products to start arriving in North American local game stores in October.
