Another live-action (though, we're really not sure that applies when all of the main characters will be CGI) take on a classic Disney animated feature is in the early stages of development, and this one is set to traumatize a whole new generation of kids.
Deadline is reporting that a live-action reimagining of Bambi is in the works, with acclaimed director Sarah Polley - who recently won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for Women Talking - set to helm what will be the biggest project of her career.
A previous Bambi movie was planned back in 2020 with, Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsey Beer on board as writers, but the trade isn't sure if they'll remain on this new project or new scribes will be enlisted to pen a separate script.
The movie tells "the coming-of-age story of Bambi, the young deer struck by tragedy who counts amongst his woodland pals the rabbit Thumper and a skunk named Flower."
The '40s original was the fifth animated film to be released by the studio, and famously (or infamously) includes the heartbreaking death of Bambi's mother at the hands of a deer hunter. The movie actually received mixed reviews when it was first released, but has gained a much larger fan-base over the years.
No release or production start dates have been announced.
What do you guys make of this news? Any interest in a live-action remake of Bambi?
