Anastasia wasn't born a Disney princess but thanks to Disney/Fox merger a few years back, she was adopted into the House of Mouse. And this week, she finally officially joined the princess ranks as the 1997 film, Anastasia, has been added to the Disney+ streaming service.
Released in 1997, Anastasia ticks all the boxes of your typical Disney princess movie. It's animated. It's a wonderful musical. And it's about an amnesiac orphan girl, Anya, who sets off on a journey hoping to learn if she really is the long lost princess Anastasia. On the way, as these stories tend to go, she finds unexpected love, which complicates the matters of her identity.
It's your classic Disney movie setup, only it was made by Fox Animation Studios and distributed by 20th Century Fox. But it really is an adorable movie and it's easy to understand why so many people believed it to be a Disney animated film. And it's also why so many people ask if Anastasia is a Disney princess. Well, she is now and you can watch her adventure on the Disney+ streaming service.
The film also features a star-studded cast that includes Meg Ryan as Anastasia, John Cusack and Kelsey Grammer as the con-men Dimitri and Vladimir, respectively and Christopher Lloyd as Rasputin. It's directed by Don Bluth (The Land Before Time) and Gary Goldman (Titan A.E.).
