Last week came reports that Jeff Goldblum had revealed that Robert Downey Jr. would be returning to the role of Tony Stark (A.K.A. Iron Man) in
Marvel's What If...? animated series —
more on that here.
Marvel's What If...? will be coming to Disney+ in 2021 and retell the events of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but with a twist. For example, one episode will see Agent Peggy Carter imbued with Super-Soldier Serum rather than Steve Rogers (A.K.A. Captain America) — a play on the plot of
Captain America: The First Avenger.
Downey Jr. most recently played the role of Tony Stark in, the now highest-grossing film of all time,
Avengers: Endgame and seemingly hung up the helmet. Many fans didn't take to kindly to finding out that the actor returning to the role so soon after that. However, fear not as new reports indicate that Downey Jr. won't be returning as the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist after all.
Here's an excerpt from a new report from
The Wrap on the topic of Downey Jr.'s supposed return in
Marvel's What If...?:
"Disney declined to comment, but a week after this article originally published, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap that Goldblum misspoke and Downey will not be appearing in What If?" Perhaps a soundalike will be employed in order to play the role of Tony Stark.
