EA Sports is teasing some sort of crossover between its Madden NFL football game and Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants.
The teaser was shared on the Madden social media account, asking fans, "Are you ready?" -- a reference to the signature line in the SpongeBob SquarePants intro song. Funny enough, it's also the opening phrase for Hank Williams Jr.'s Monday Night Football theme song.
The post also featured an image of SpongeBob's face along with the date January 7, which is presumably when we'll learn more about this crossover. While Madden and SpongeBob may seem like an odd pairing, it actually makes sense if you saw our previous post about the NFL and CBS Sports collaboration with Nickelodeon for this weekend's Wild Card game.
As we previously reported, CBS Sports and Nickelodeon -- which are both owned by the same company -- are teaming up for a special "slime-filled presentation" of the Wild Card game between the Chicago Bears and the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, January 10. While CBS will host its standard broadcast, the game will also air on Nickelodeon and feature "one-of-a-kind kid-focused content and Nick-themed elements throughout, including a special halftime presentation, guest reporters and original on-field graphics, virtual filters and more." We'll also be getting a sneak peek of Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years will be shown during halftime.
It appears this Nickelodeon crossover is expanding to all facets of the NFL, including its licensed Madden game. In all likelihood, we'll probably see some sort of SpongeBob-themed cosmetic items pop up in The Yard, a backyard-inspired 6v6 side mode in Madden that's all about big plays and fancy gear. We'll find out more on January 7.
