After nearly a year of teasing, including a reveal at the 2017 San Diego Comic-Con, Darkwing Duck finally made his grand appearance in Disney's
DuckTales reboot. Only, it wasn't nearly what fans were expecting.
The beloved character made his appearance in the opening scene of the
DuckTales episode "
Beware The B.U.D.D.Y. System," and it was a perfect tribute to the terror who flaps at night. Check out the clip below.
Unfortunately, it was shortly after that it was revealed to be only an old TV show that Launchpad loved to watch. Fans were crushed to find out Darkwing Duck doesn't actually exist in the world of
DuckTales. Or maybe he does. As
Den of Geek points out:
In the episode, Launchpad mentions that the in-universe actor who played Darkwing, Jim Starling, got "pretty banged up in later seasons" because he did all his own stunts. The inclusion of this line seems to hint there's more to Darkwing Duck in the DuckTales universe than just a fun cameo.
Additionally, Frank Angones, co-producer, writer, and story editor for the
DuckTales reboot seemingly suggested he has bigger plans for the caped crusader. Taking to Twitter, Angones offered this in response to fan criticism for the brief Darkwing Duck cameo.
This seems to suggest that there's still more to come regarding this fan-favorite character. And, if you recall, the
DuckTales creative team previously said they were using the new series as a way to introduce a younger generation to the wider Disney Duck canon. Let's get dangerous.
