According to a couple of new reports by We Got This Covered, Disney are planning to remake the 2001 animated film by the name of Atlantis: The Lost Empire. This would be in line with the plethora of live-action remakes that they've been putting out as of late - such as The Lion King which arrives in theatres tomorrow or Mulan which will release in March of next year.

Below you can see the synopsis for the original, animated version of Atlantis: The Lost Empire. A live-action remake will presumably follow similar lines.

An inexperienced young adventurer becomes the key to unraveling an ancient mystery when he joins up with a group of daredevil explorers to find the legendary lost empire of Atlantis. A naive-but-determined museum cartographer Milo Thatch (Michael J. Fox), dreams of completing the quest begun by his late grandfather, a famous explorer. When a journal surfaces, an eccentric billionaire funds an expedition and the action shifts to high gear.

The site has apparently been informed that Tom Holland, who is best known for playing Peter Parker A.KA. Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home, etc.), is at the top of Disney's wishlist for the lead role of Milo Thatch.

Additionally, it's said that Guillermo Del Toro is being eyed to direct. Del Toro is most well-known for directing the Academy Award-winning film named The Shape of Water.

However, following this report, the renowned director took to Twitter to shoot down these rumours. Despite this, the site insists that their report is accurate and that Del Toro simply hasn't been reached out to just yet. Make of that what you will.
