The next animated adventure for Batman will be a return to the character's roots. While there have been countless renditions of the adventures of The Dark Knight, there has been one in particular that has withstood the test of time and is still considered to be one of the best depictions of the character in any medium: Batman: The Animated Series.
So it's no surprise that HBO Max and Cartoon Network's will try to recapture that magic with the new animated series Batman: Caped Crusader. Leading this reimagining of the Batman mythology are executive producers Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves. The series will be produced by Warner Bros. Animation (WBA), Bad Robot Productions and 6th & Idaho.
Batman: Caped Crusader is said to represent "Timm’s return to the iconic DC character in animated episodic television," which of course began with the Emmy Award-winning Batman: The Animated Series -- considered to be the gold standard of animated superhero storytelling.
Only time will tell if Batman: Caped Crusader will succeed in capturing that same feeling, but the little that was shared about the upcoming series sounds promising. Plot specifics weren't detailed, but the trio of producers have some bold ambition with the series.
“We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City. The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters," said Timm, Abrams and Reeves in a joint statement. "We cannot wait to share this new world.”
Here's a quick teaser for what fans can expect with Batman: Caped Crusader:
Utilizing state-of-the-art animation techniques and technologies available, this powerful creative partnership will once again reinvent Batman and his iconic rogue’s gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters and intense action sequences all set in a visually striking world.
Batman: Caped Crusader has already been greenlit, but doesn't yet have a premiere date. In addition to HBO Max, it is said that the series will also air on Cartoon Network.
