It's been nearly a year since we first heard about the series, but Bruce Campbell has now confirmed that Sam Raimi is still in the midst of actively developing an Evil Dead animated TV show.
While Lee Cronin's Evil Dead Rise will put a fresh spin on the franchise in theaters later this year, small screen projects have largely centred on Campbell's Ashley J. Williams and his battle against the demonic Deadites. As well as starring in the first three Evil Dead movies, the actor reprised the role in the three-season Ash vs Evil Dead on Starz.
We don't know exactly where this spin-off would fit into all that, but it does appear to be taking shape.
"All I can say is we’re actively pursuing it," Campbell tells Bloody Disgusting. "Sam’s a busy guy. He had a big hit movie, so he’s got a lot on his plate, but he and his brother are actively shaping out the world. It’s one thing to get an animator and say, ‘Hey, animate this!’ You’ve got to know what you’re going to animate."
"I look forward to it, because my voice hasn’t aged as much as I have."
Considering the fact Ash vs Evil Dead ended with a huge cliffhanger, many fans are optimistic this animated series will serve as a follow-up of sorts. However, that could be a little niche and may alienate some casual horror fans looking to follow the franchise into a totally different genre.
We're certainly optimistic about where things go from here, anyway, though it seems fair to assume this Evil Dead series is still a good few years away from reaching our screens.
With Evil Dead Rise expected to be a much darker take on the franchise than recent efforts, there's definitely room for a quirky animated spin on the property that focuses on Ash, so we'll keep you updated as this one continues to take shape.
