When the first part of DC Studios' "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" slate was revealed, we learned that Creature Commandos will be the first time we visit the DCU in animated form. James Gunn has said the plan is to tell stories across live-action, animation, and video games, and this series promises to be an important part of that concept.

Revolving around characters like Rick Flag Sr., Nina Mazursky, Dr. Phosphorus, Frankenstein's Monster, G.I. Robot, The Bride, and The Suicide Squad's Weasel, this task force assembled by Amanda Waller is likely to be key to the "Monsters" half of that slate title, especially with Swamp-Thing on the way, for example.

Gunn has already confirmed the actors cast in Creature Commandos will play their characters in live-action should they be utilised elsewhere in the DCU, and the filmmaker has now shared an update about the series.

Responding to a fan on Twitter, he revealed: "Starting production; almost done casting."

While we don't anticipate seeing Creature Commandos on our screens until 2025 at the earliest, this bodes well for the project and hopefully means we can look forward to some casting news in the coming months. As for a first look, DC Studios might have something ready for Comic-Con, but they still need to release what's left of the DCEU in 2023.

The Creature Commandos first appeared in the pages of Weird War Tales #93 in 1980. Created by J.M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick, the team was a special military unit made up of supernatural beings, and while the team's mission primarily took place in World War II, the DCU's interpretation will be set in the present day.

Gunn has written all seven episodes of the show and with Superman: Legacy kicking off the new DCU in July 2025, Creature Commandos will either follow Waller or head our way after that movie.
