DC Studios is in the midst of rebooting the DCEU as the DCU, with James Gunn and Peter Safran's planning to create a cohesive shared world across film, television, animation, and video games.
The former has already confirmed actors cast in the latter two types of projects will play their characters in live-action as well, with the goal being to create a shared world that's perhaps even more connected than the MCU. One of the first animated TV shows heading our way is HBO Max's Creature Commandos and we may know of at least two actors who have been cast.
Recently, there have been rumblings online that Captain America: The Winter Soldier star Frank Grillo will play Rick Flag Sr., with Hellboy's Ron Perlman taking on the role of Eric Frankenstein.
We couldn't fault either casting decision if accurate, and Grillo added some fuel to the fire on Instagram a few days ago.
"Me and my guy @perlmutations [Ron Perlman] we did a little film together awhile back," the actor wrote over a screenshot of an article about the casting rumours, adding: "Could this be two? hmmmmmmmmmm."
They previously shared the screen in 2019's Hell on a Border, and as keen as we would be to see a reunion in the DCU, it's probably best to take Grillo's comments - and that initial rumour - with a pinch of salt for now. Then again, Gunn has strongly hinted that he's already cast the Creature Commandos, so an announcement may well be imminent.
However, we don't necessarily expect any big reveals to be shared until this year's San Diego Comic-Con.
While Viola Davis will lend her voice to Amanda Waller and Sean Gunn has been confirmed as Weasel, the characters who have yet to reveal the actor playing them include Rick Flag Sr., Nina Mazursky, Eric Frankenstein, the Bride of Frankenstein, and G.I. Robot.
Creature Commandos is expected to arrive on HBO Max in 2024/2025.
