DC Studios is in the process of rebooting the DCEU as the DCU, with James Gunn and Peter Safran's ultimate goal being to create a cohesive shared world across film, television, animation, and video games.
The former has already confirmed actors cast in the latter two types of projects will play their characters in live-action, resulting in a shared world that's perhaps even more connected than the MCU. One of the first animated TV shows heading our way is HBO Max's Creature Commandos and Frank Grillo is the latest addition to the project's cast.
The Wrap has confirmed that the Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Endgame star will play Rick Flag Sr.
Grillo previously teased his and Ron Perlman's involvement with the series, though there's currently no official word on the latter.
The animated series is coming to HBO Max next year, though it's unclear whether Grillo will get to play the father of Suicide Squad and The Suicide Squad's Rick Flag beyond this show. After all, with this group likely tied to A.R.G.U.S. and Task Force X, who can say whether they'll all make it out of this adventure alive?
While the trade points out that Joel Kinnaman previously played Flag, that was Jr, not Sr. Unless Multiversal shenanigans are rewriting the hero's place in this world, we're going to assume they're still father and son (though the closeness in Kinnaman and Grillo's ages muddies the waters somewhat).
While Viola Davis will lend her voice to Amanda Waller and Sean Gunn has been confirmed as Weasel, the characters who have yet to reveal the actor playing them include Rick Flag Sr., Nina Mazursky, Eric Frankenstein, the Bride of Frankenstein, and G.I. Robot.
Are you excited to see the Creature Commandos in action? Stay tuned for more details as we have them.
