In just a few months, Disneyland and Walt Disney World will open the eagerly awaited
Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, a new 14-acre land in Hollywood Studios inspired by
Star Wars. And while this massive expansion has been the center of attention for years, Disney isn't completely ignoring their other parks around the globe.
Announced this week, Shanghai Disney Resort will be adding a
Zootopia-themed land to Shanghai Disneyland. Based on Walt Disney Animation Studios' hit animated movie, the Zootopia-themed land will invite guests to the mammalian metropolis of Zootopia "where anyone can be anything."
Details are understandably light at the moment, but the land will feature a new major attraction that is said "will seamlessly blend Disney storytelling and state-of-the-art technology to bring this fan-favorite movie and its characters to life – including Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde.ing this fan-favorite movie and its characters to life – including Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde." Of course, appropriately themed entertainment, merchandise, and food and beverages will help to fully immerse park guests into the animated movie-inspired land.
Released in 2016,
Zootopia went on to haul in over $1 billion at the global box office. With over $235 million from China,
Zootopia was the country's No. 1 animated feature film in history, making Shanghai Disneyland the perfect location for this themed expansion.
The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when rookie Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery.
Zootopia will be Shanghai Disneyland's eighth themed land. It's the second major expansion since the resort opened in 2016. No opening date has been announced, but construction is targeted to begin later this year.
