Detective Pikachu will be releasing into theatres in less than a week and will feature Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith as Detective Pikachu and Tim Goodman (the titular Pokemon's human companion) respectively. The film is an adaptation of the Nintendo DS video-game of the same name and thus its story will involve the duo teaming up in order to figure out what happened to Tim's missing father.
With the
Pokemon franchise being so rich in content, from TV shows to games, many fans wonder where the live-action cinematic Pokemon universe could go after the upcoming and highly-anticipated
Detective Pikachu movie.
Comicbook.com recently put this question to Ryan Reynolds himself.
“It could go anywhere. Justice [Smith] ... has probably forgotten more about Pokemon than I’ll ever know. So, if we’re lucky enough to be making a bunch of these, I think you’ve got to take some deep dives. You’ve also got to zig when everyone thinks you’re going to zag. That starts with story and making it current and fun."
The actor went on, admitting that he's shocked this type of
Pokemon cinematic universe hasn't been done before now.
“I’m surprised this hasn’t been developed earlier because it is such a universe. You can see it going in all kinds of different directions.”
Detective Pikachu is set to release in theatres on May 10th, 2019.
