The road to Toy Story 4 has been quite the bumpy one. Originally slated to release this year, issues with the script forced Disney to push the animated film back to 2019, with The Incredibles 2 taking its spot.

While there have been various reports regarding the writing drama surrounding Toy Story 4, it was never really clear how much work had to be done on the script following the departure of initial writers Rashida Jones and Will McCormack. Now, Bo Peep actress Annie Potts has revealed that "most" of the film's original script had to be rewritten.

Speaking to Radio Times, Potts said, “[Toy Story 4] was supposed to come out this year and then they threw out three-quarters of it and rewrote. Usually, it takes – from start to finish – two years. But because they threw most of it in the bin and started over [my time on the project has] been extended a little bit. I’ve done a lot of work on it.”

Toy Story 4 has reportedly been in various stages of development since 2013, but as everyone is well-aware, Pixar doesn't mind taking some extra time to ensure a quality movie. “They’re funny those Pixar people." Potts added. "They just take their time. It’s very painstaking work. If they don’t like whole sections then they just chuck it and start over again. They have that great creative liberty to do that.”

Following the departure of Jones and McCormack, Pixar brought in Black List writer Stephany Folsom to rewrite the script. Although it sounds like a ton of the script was rewritten, it's unclear if the actual plot is still intact. Though Disney and Pixar haven't yet released a synopsis, Toy Story 4 was previously described as a love story between Bo Peep and Woody (Tom Hanks). Based on Potts' comments, it sounds like that could still be a major focal point of the film.

“I have a big part!" Potts revealed. "I’m thrilled!”

“Most of [my work] is with Tom [Hanks, who voices Woody]." Potts continued. "I’ve never done any animation before where you got to work with the other actors. [Normally it’s] just a single voice at a time. But because of the nature of what we’re doing, we’ve been having Tom and me together. That’s fun! That is really fun!”

Toy Story 4 is due out in theaters on June 21, 2019.
