Though some were opposed to the idea of a Bumblebee solo movie, when it was first announced, the promotional material released since has done a great job at quelling any worries or doubts.
It's been made clear, by Bumblebee's two trailers, that the film won't be like the others in the Transformers movie series - which have essentially become synonymous with style-over-substance schlock. The solo movie aims to appeal to the heart rather than the eyes - though its CGI is evidently still top-notch.
The film looks to be immensely more heartwarming and wonderous than previous live-action endeavours by the franchise - and the below image demonstrates this change of pace quite nicely.
Check out the image released by Empire below:
The image features the adorable, hulking Autobot's attempt to sit on, his human friend, Charlie Watson's sofa. If that doesn't exemplify the light-hearted tone then I don't know what does. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, producer of the Transformers movies, explained that much of the film is dedicated to this type of whimsy:
A giant chunk of our movie is about his relationship with Charlie [Steinfeld], and as it goes on he makes a total mess of her house. He’s intrigued by her dog. And it’s funny to watch her turn him onto ‘80s culture.
What do you think of the new image? Are you looking forward to Bumblebee?
On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie, on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken.
Bumblebee arrives in theatres on December 21st
