As well as Pokemon themselves, Legendary's recent, live-action film, Detective Pikachu is chock-full of Easter Eggs to other instalments in the Pokemon franchise. Comicbook.com (via Gamefragger) recently featured the film's writers, Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, on their podcast. There, they discussed some interesting references that are included in Detective Pikachu.

Firstly, Samit brings up Snorlax sleeping in the middle of the road before mentioning a reference to the Kanto region. "I liked some Snorlax blocking traffic. It's something, we had that in early scripts, that was something we always wanted in there. I think that line about Mewtwo being from the Kanto region is one that ... I don't know if that's quite an easter egg, but it's definitely provocative. I like that."

Kanto was the first portion of the Pokemon world ever introduced. It served as the setting for the Generation I games as well as many of the more recent ones. This line suggests ties to Pokemon: The First Movie which predominantly featured Mewtwo, perhaps teasing that the legendary Pokemon from the two films are actually the same entity.

Hernandez then mentioned an early momen in the film in which we're show a Pokemon trainer who seems to have an affinity for red clothing. "There's a moment where they start the video sequence, they cut to a trainer that seems ... he's certainly wearing a lot of red. So, that to me is, for the people that choose to interpret it as "Is this Red?" Well, he's wearing a lot of red."

Red was the player-character of Pokemon Red and Blue as well as for a plethora of other Pokemon titles. The character even featured in Super Smash Bros. under the name of "Pokemon Trainer." It seems clear that the character we can spot in Detective Pikachu and the one from the games are one in the same.

Ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son, Tim, to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry's former Pokémon partner, wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth Detective Pikachu. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to work together, as Tim is the only human who can talk with Pikachu, they join forces to unravel the tangled mystery.
