The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, the long-awaited feature film based on SpongeBob SquarePants, will finally make its debut on March 4, 2021.
The live-action/computer-animated hybrid film was originally slated for a theatrical release in May 2020, but the COVID-19 global pandemic resulted in multiple delays and, eventually, a decision by the studio to release it on digital platforms. Fans will be able to rent The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run from AppleTV, Prime Video Vudu, and "other digital stores."
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run will also be available to watch through Paramount+ when the streaming service rebrand of CBS All Access launches on March 4.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run follows best friends SpongeBob and Patrick as they embark on a rescue mission to save Gary, SpongeBob's pet snail who gets snail-napped. The adventure will take them from Bikini Bottom to The Lost City of Atlantic City.
SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run is the third feature based on the beloved Nickelodeon cartoon series, but it's the first film in the franchise to be fully animated in stylized CGI rather than traditional 2D animation. It's directed and written by series developer and former series writer Tim Hill. The series' regular voice cast reprised their roles for the film, but a number of guest stars are also lending their talent including Awkwafina, Keanu Reeves, Snoop Dogg, Danny Trejo, and Tiffany Haddish.
SpongeBob SquarePants, his best friend Patrick, and the Bikini Bottom gang star in their most epic adventure movie yet! When SpongeBob’s beloved pet snail Gary goes missing, a path of clues leads SpongeBob and Patrick to the powerful King Poseidon, who has Gary held captive in the Lost City of Atlantic City. On their mission to save Gary, SpongeBob and his pals team up for a heroic and hilarious journey where they discover nothing is stronger than the power of friendship.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run premieres on March 4.
