Nintendo recently went live with a Direct showcase solely dedicated to their upcoming cinematic collaboration with Illumination, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. During this livestream, they shared the very first trailer for the animated video game movie.
Based on the popular video game franchise of the same name, The Super Mario Bros. Movie will feature the voices Chris Pratt and Charlie Day, both of whom starred in The LEGO Movie, as the titular plumber brothers.
That cast also includes Jack Black as the voice of the nefarious Bowser, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.
The trailer shows Bowser and his forces invading a kingdom of penguins before cutting to the Mushroom Kingdom, where it appears that Mario has just been deposited for the very first time from one of the franchise's trademark green pipes; there he meets Toad and the trailer ultimately closes on Luigi fleeing from an army of Dry Bones.
This trailer allows us our first chance to hear what Pratt, Black, Richardson, Key, and Day sound like in their respective roles. While Pratt's delivery has proven to be contentious, Black and the others are getting nothing but praise.
