The first official trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is here and features the return of Ben Schwartz as the titular speedster, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as Tom and Maddie Wachowski, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, and introduces Idris Elba as Knuckles. Jeff Fowler also reprises the role of director.
After being banished to a fantastical realm of mushrooms at the end of the first instalment, Dr. Robotnik is back with a vengeance and after the source of ultimate power: the Master Emerald. In the meantime, Sonic has taken up being a hero to the people of Earth, though his parental guardian, Tom Wachowski, doesn't approve.
Of course, eventually it's up to Sonic and Tails to prevent Dr. Robotnik's world domination. Though, Sonic has a worthy foe this time around in the form of a particular red echidna. For more story information, check out the new, official synopsis below.

The world’s favorite blue hedgehog is back for a next-level adventure in SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2. After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.
