Unless you've been living under a rock for the past 6 months, Disney gave us a first look at the new live-action
Aladdin movie back in October. While the teaser trailer gets a lot of things right, it did not provide us with a good look at the Genie, played by Will Smith.
When Disney finally gave us that long-awaited first look at the Genie, people were completely disappointed since the picture had Will Smith's Genie in his human form — which is, obviously, not what people were expecting.
Things didn't get any better when we got our real first look at the blue Genie in
Aladdin, just yesterday, and the response has been mostly negative — mainly because it just looks like Will Smith in blue. All of this coupled with some pretty questionable use of CGI, make it look like Smith's face has been pasted on a CGI body; giving the whole character an uncanny valley look that, truth be told, looks pretty bad.
Art Director at Sony Interactive Entertainment's Santa Monica Studio — responsibles for the brilliant new
God of War game — has taken it upon himself to make some modifications to Will Smith's Genie by giving him some slightly more cartoony features — and the result is simply great, providing that Grassetti can only do so much with the original design created by Disney.
Take a look:
Athrilling and vibrant live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic, “Aladdin” is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future.
Aladdin rides the magic carpet into theatres on the 24th of May.
