SUPER MARIO BROS: Next Year's Illumination Animated Film Is Including A Deep Cut Character As The Bros' Boss

There was a curse on video game films for a long time, but in recent years, several movies have found success in the wheelhouse. Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Mortal Kombat are only a few of what seems to be a resurgence of a genre long deemed doomed.

In addition to the upcoming Borderlands movie, which includes immense star power and the two Witcher live-action series currently filming for Netflix, there is also a Super Mario Bros film headed to the big screen. Scheduled for 2022, Illumination's animated flick will finally see the beloved plumbing brothers return to theaters after quite the hiatus.

While there was a previous announcement that production was still going smoothly on the movie, little else was revealed about the project. However, the first bit of news has finally surfaced as actor/comedian Sebastian Maniscalco casually revealed in an interview that he'd be voicing a character in Super Mario Bros. Of all the people he could have said he was voicing, it turned out to be Spike.

"I'm in the movie Super Mario Bros., an animated movie. I'm playing Spike, their boss. So I'm gonna do that at twelve," Monascalco mentioned in the interview, a clip of which you can view in the Twitter feed above. The obscure character is Foreman Spike from the 1985 Wrecking Crew game, one of the very few appearances he made in the series overall.

While there is certainly much more actual news to come for this movie, it's interesting to have our first bit of casting in Monascalco and an idea of what direction they're headed with the characters. You can see the full interview in which the comedian reveals his role below.

Whatever your thoughts may be on this revelation, we want to hear them in the comments, so make sure to sound off with your reactions!

Illumination's big-screen animated Super Mario Bros movie is set for a 2022 release date.
