The first teaser trailer for 20th Century Fox's new animated adventure
Spies in Disguise has been released, just hours after the studio debuted a
batch of character posters. As previously revealed, the new animated espionage-comedy features the voice talent of Will Smith (
Men in Black, Suicide Squad) and Tom Holland (
Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War ).
Smith voices Lance Sterling, a smooth super spy, who works alongside Walter Beckett, a socially-awkward, but incredibly smart scientist/inventor voiced by Tom Holland. Walter creates some pretty high-tech gadgets which aid Lance on his epic missions; but, as the trailer teases, not all of them are such great ideas.
In this specific teaser, Lance is transformed into a pigeon. Fundamentally, it's actually a pretty clever disguise, although not incredibly functional for saving the world. It's unclear if Smith's character will spend the entire film as a pigeon or if the entire film will feature funny gag transformations. The synopsis does state that an event happens which will require the two to work together and rely on each other for an incredibly important mission. Could this bird transformation be the event or is it something bigger? Whatever the situation, with the fate of the world in peril, Lance and Walter will have to work together like never before.
Super spy Lance Sterling (Will Smith) and scientist Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) are almost exact opposites. Lance is smooth, suave and debonair. Walter is… not. But what Walter lacks in social skills he makes up for in smarts and invention, creating the awesome gadgets Lance uses on his epic missions. But when events take an unexpected turn, Walter and Lance suddenly have to rely on each other in a whole new way. And if this odd couple can’t learn to work as a team, the whole world is in peril. SPIES IN DISGUISE is an animated comedy set in the high-octane globe-trotting world of international espionage.
Spies in Disguise will open in theaters on January 18, 2019.
