SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Swinging Toward $26M-$30M China Debut; Plus Another New International Poster
Sony's critically-acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has gotten off to a solid start in China, where it's expected to win the weekend with an estimated $26 million to $30 million launch.
After winning the hearts of fans domestically, Sony's critically-acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has gotten off to a strong start in China with an approximate $6.6 million opening day, which is the biggest first day for an animated film this year, topping both Incredibles 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet.
On its current trajectory, Spider-Verse should easily win the weekend with an estimated $26 million to $28 million debut, although some pundits are projecting a debut in the low $30 million range. With a strong start like that, it's looking increasingly likely that, by the end of its run, it will be this year's biggest animated grosser in China, topping Incredibles 2 ($51.4M).
At the time of this post, Spider-Verse has grossed over $73.4 million worldwide (not including this weekend or China) and is heading toward a $17.45 million weekend stateside, so expect its tally to reach $100 million to $120 million by Christmas.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros.' Aquaman is still holding strong in the Middle Kingdom, where it's grossed over $209.5 million to date, but the loss of screens this holiday weekend will likely cost it its box office crown.
The animated superhero feature, which was co-directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, tells the origin story of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and takes him on a dimension-shattering adventure as he partners with a number of Spider-people from different universes, including Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-Ham (John Mulaney), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn), and Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), to take down the villainous Kingpin (Liev Schreiber) and his sinister allies.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, bring their unique talents to a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, with a groundbreaking visual style that’s the first of its kind. Spider-Man™: Into the Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask.
