SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Secures China Release Date; Tracking For A $30M-$40M Opening

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will hit U.S. theaters next month, and after announcing that it secured a Christmas opening in China, early tracking indicates the film may nab a $30M-$40M opening weekend.

We've known for a while that Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse would hit theaters stateside on December 14, but we didn't know if or when the animated feature would open in China. Fortunately, it has now been announced (via THR) that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will swing into theaters in the Middle Kingdom on December 21, one week after the feature's domestic release.

Securing a China release date will undoubtedly provide a boost for the film's box office, but the picture will still be facing some stiff competition, as Aquaman will open on December 7 in China and sleeper hit Searching has nabbed a December 14 release date.

Aside from nabbing a China release date, early tracking from Deadline indicates the movie can earn anywhere between $30M-$40M domestically when it opens in North America.

While it doesn't look like Spider-Verse will break any opening day records, a
$30M-$40M opening is still a reasonable number for the film. However, the film will be tested the following week when it faces off against blockbusters like Aquaman, Mary Poppins Returns and Bumblebee.
