Though only a relatively new character, Spider-Gwen AKA Spider-Woman has rapidly became one of Marvel Comics most popular and bankable assets. Spider-Gwen twists the iconic Spider-Man origin story on its head, thereby imbuing Gwen Stacy with spider-like abilities - rather than Peter Parker. She rocks and awesome, colourful, hooded outfit - which has thankfully been perfectly represented on-screen.
As a result of her large fanbase, Gwen making an appearance during Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse has rocketed anticipation of the film up sevenfold. Singer and actress Hailee Steinfeld is the voice of Spider-Woman, and until now, that's about all the information we had on her Into The Spider-Verse representation - thankfully though, CinemaBlend recently ascertained some new information from co-director Bob Persichetti:
She is a very capable Spider-person. She is a peer of Miles. Miles has Peter Parker as his mentor - a Peter Parker that's older; there's a generation gap there. [Miles] is 13; our Gwen Stacy is 16. So they're almost peers. She's a little bit older, but he can relate to her. And she's a very capable Spider-person.
Gwen has appeared scarcely throughout the promotional material, and fans have been left to wonder just how important of a role she will play in the animated feature. CinemaBlend put that question to screenwriter Rodney Rothman, to which he reassured fans that Gwen will have an exponential presence:
[She's] very important in our story. On some level the story is about, beyond Miles, it's about a group of characters who thought they were alone.
What do you think about Persichetti and Rothman's comments? Are you looking forward to seeing Spider-Gwen make her big-screen debut?
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse arrives in theatres on December 21st.
