A Spider-Noir trailer wasn't the only exciting web-slinging news we got this week. During an interview with The Hollywood report, Sony Pictures Animation's presidents Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville offered a brief, but exciting update on the status of two animated Spidey films.
During the wide-ranging interview, the presidents were asked if the Spider-Punk and Spider-Gwen movies had writers. While they couldn't give a direct answer, they did confirm that both film are in an "active" development phase.
"I’m not allowed to say. But we are active on both," responded Belson.
Both Spider-Punk and Spider-Gwen are spin-offs from the Spider-Verse series. The Spider-Punk movie was first announced by Sony Pictures Animation in early August 2025. At hte time, it was reported that daniel Kaluuya (the voice of Spider-Punk in Across the Spider-Verse) was co-writing the script with ajon Singh.
Plot details remain under wraps, but the movie will focus on Hobie Brown, aka Spider-Punk, the rebellious punk-rock version of a Spider-hero first introduced in 2023's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Hailing from Earth-138, Spider-Punk is known for his anti-establishment attitude and electric guitar-style combat.
The Spider-Gwen movie update comes as a bit more of a surprise. Talks of this project go asfar back as 2018 when Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen, aka Ghost-Spider, was first introduced in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. In her alternate-universe, Gwen is the one who is bitten by a radioactive spider and becomes the universe's Spider-Hero. Spider-Gwen was featured even more prominently in the 2023 sequel Across the Spider-Verse, which focused more on her story and relationships.
Prior to this interview, we weren't really sure on the status of either film, so the fact they are both in active development comes as a welcomed surprise. That said, neither spin-off has a release date as of yet, so it may be quite some time before we hear or see anything a bit more official.
In the meantime, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the third film and final installment in the animated trilogy, is scheduled to hit theaters in Summer 2027. The film should pick up directly after the cliffhanger ending of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Beyond animation, Spider-Man fans can also look forward to Spider-Noir, an upcoming live-action series based on the Marvel comic Spider-Man Noir. The series, which will premiere on Prime Video this year, follows Ben Reilly (Nicolas Cage), "an aging and down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero." Season 1 Spider-Noir will debut on May 27, 2026.
