While nothing official has been announced, Shams Charania, senior lead NBA insider for The Athletic and Stadium, reports an impressive roster of players joining LeBron James in
Space Jam 2.
With filming on the upcoming sequel expected to begin this summer, we had previously heard that James
was having difficulty recruiting fellow NBA players to join him in the movie. That no longer appears to be the case as Charania reports that Damian Lillard, Klay Thompson, and Anthony Davis along with WNBA stars Diana Taurasi and Nneka Ogwumike are set to have "key roles" in the movie.
Interestingly, Anthony Davis was just traded from the New Orleans Pelicans to the Los Angeles Lakers where LeBron James plays. NBA enthusiasts are reading into the casting as indiciation that free agent Klay Thompson will also head to L.A. to play with James for the Lakers.
Charania adds that in addition to these players,
Space Jam 2 could feature "several more" NBA and WNBA players, including Chiney Ogwumike.
What sort of role these players will have in
Space Jam 2 remains to be seen as plot details are still being kept under wraps. In the original movie, NBA stars appeared alongside Michael Jordan in small cameo roles as their powers were sucked away by the Monstars.
Space Jam 2 will hit the court and the big screen on July 16, 2021. It's being directed by Terence Nance (
Random Acts of Flyness) with
Black Panther writer and director Ryan Coogler producing.
