Soul was announced by Disney-Pixar back in July. It will be Pixar's next animated film after Onward —
which you can find out more about here. Soul will star Jamie Foxx (
Ray), Tina Fey (
Mean Girls), Questlove (The Roots), Phylicia Rashad, and Daveed Diggs — the latter actor is also
in talks to play Sebastian in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.
Foxx plays a middle school teacher and jazz musician living in New York City. Writer and co-director Kemp Powers explains that the character is someone
“who’s lived his whole life like he was meant to do this one thing [music] to the exclusion of pretty every other thing.” Inside Out and
Up director Pete Docter will helm the animated film alongside Powers.
Recently, Entertainment Weekly shared a still from
Soul which features the aforementioned character of Joe Gardner as he presumably makes his way to work. You can check out the new still below and also what producer Dana Murray had to say about the upcoming animated film:
“Like Inside Out, we’re taking you to a world where no one’s ever been — well, for a long time, we went in a completely different direction than any of the other films that Pete’s done, it’s hard to contain our enthusiasm over how much people are going to be surprised by what they see.”
Soul arrives in theaters on June 19th, 2020.
