SONIC THE HEDGEHOG: Super Sonic Was In Early Versions Of The Script But It Was Scrapped

Director Jeff Fowler has recently revealed that Super Sonic was actually in early versions of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie script, but it ended up being scrapped for a simple reason.

The first live-action adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog was a total succes at the box office, and amongst long-time fans of Sega's beloved Blue Blur; something that was somewhat unexpected, considering that the first trailer made fans lose any hope they had about the movie being good.

Sonic the Hedgehog is currently being regarded as one of the best video game movie adaptations ever made, and video game aficionados seem to agree — with some fans even stating that it is simply the best video game adaptation ever made.

Now that fans and general audiences have received the movie so well, people have begun to wonder whether they will be seeing more of their favourite characters in a sequel. As it turns out, one of these characters — or, to be more precise, a specific transformation — is Super Sonic.

As recently revealed by director Jeff Fowler, Super Sonic was in early versions of the script, but they decided not to introduce him in the movie because of one very simple reason: it wouldn't have made sense within the context of the movie they were writing.

"It didn't make sense to obviously bring in the Super Sonic thing just yet," Fowler explained.

"I mean, there were very early versions of the script and the outlines where... because we knew that's something that's very important in the fan mythology, or the mythology that fans love. And Chaos Emeralds are definitely a huge part, even going back to the first game in '91, and it was definitely something that we were kind of trying to see. Like, 'Does it make sense to include one of these?'"

"But again, just going back to what I said about the simplicity of it and just for the sake of just really starting from the simplest version and not trying to do too much, it just felt like, 'Let's just... let's do the origins as Sonic and Robotnik and try to nail those characters before we potentially would open it up to some of these elements from the games that fans know and love.'"

Jeff Fowler and his team did the right thing, since they really did nail Sonic and Dr. Robotnik's personalities, while also giving them both a proper origin story that perfectly sets up their iconic rivalry. Perhaps Super Sonic will show up in an inevitable sequel; until then, it is nice to see that the director does want to do the character and his lore justice.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.

Sonic the Hedgehog is currently playing theatres.
