When Jim Carrey was cast as Dr. Robotnik in Paramount Pictures' live-action
Sonic the Hedgehog movie, people understood right away why it was one of the most inspired choice to play Sonic's villainous antagonist; Carrey could really make him a memorable character.
Carrey has already played the villain — or antagonist, depending on the movie you're thinking about — in other films, but many people were immediately reminded of
Batman Forever's The Riddler; a character Carrey played over 25 years ago.
In a recent interview with Comicbook, Carrey drew some comparisons between
Sonic the Hedgehog's Dr. Robotnik and
Batman Forever's The Riddler; revealing that he even sees both characters actually making a pretty good, and villainous team.
"
I wouldn't put one against the other," Carrey reveales when specifically talking about Robotnik and The Riddler, adding that "
they'd be a great team."
"
But you know, it's like Robotnik and every super villain basically comes from a place of neglect with a feeling of absolute worthlessness that manifests itself in in magnificent creations that are designed to control the world, put their brand on everybody, and maybe even get inside your bloodstream with some nanotechnology occasionally," the actor explains.
Without the shadow of a doubt, Carrey will bring some much-needed energy to the evil Dr. Robotnik, and his portrayal of the character is actually one of the things that most fans of the
Sonic the Hedgehog series are looking forward to seeing. We'll just have to wait until the movie finally hits theatres this Valentine's Day.
Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
Sonic the Hedgehog is spin-dashing into theatres on the 14th of February.
