Steve Carell stars as the victim of an assault by neo-nazis who seeks refuge in imaging the heroic day-to-day undertakings of his action figure collection in an effort to piece back together his shattered memory. As the first trailer below reveals, the film appears to be a mixture of live-action that blends animation that mimics stop-motion and motion capture- it's truly a unique look.
It should be noted that some animators feel that Zemeckis could be repeating his mistakes on past CGI efforts like Beowulf and the Polar Express, films that are widely regarded as slipping into the "uncanny valley" - animated films deemed creepy for their "too realistic" portrayals.
The film is the fantastical re-telling of the real-life story of Mark Hogancamp, who found solace after a brutal beating in building a model of a Belgian World War II town. You can read up on the real-life story and watch a trailer for its documentary here:
