It's been more than a decade since we've seen Puss in Boots on our screens, but Puss in Boots: The Last Wish proved to be more than worth the wait. The animated sequel has received rave reviews and already earned an Oscar nomination for "Best Animated Feature," an award we'd argue it deserves to win.
Antonio Banderas returns as the fearless feline hero, but the movie ends in a way that definitely leaves the door open for more stories...that might just include a few familiar faces.
In Puss in Boots: The Last Wish's final moments, the sword-wielding cat and his friends set sail for Far Far Away, the home of Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey. It definitely feels like the stage is being set for the long-awaited (and long-overdue) Shrek 5, and Banderas shed some light on what the future might hold in store during a recent interview with Radio Times.
"It doesn't depend on me, normally sequels are chosen by the audience," he explained. "[But] if they go to the movie theatre massively in the way that they are responding to Puss in Boots probably this could lead to the possibility of another movie with Puss."
"Or as the movie indicates towards the end when you see Far Far Away, they are going to visit some old friends at the end of the movie - maybe Shrek is coming back."
"I don't know, there are many different possibilities open for these characters to continue," the actor continued, "but that doesn't depend on me, that is something that the audience chooses in a way."
We're pretty sure the audience wants more Puss in Boots and another Shrek movie, so we'd bet on the stories of all these characters continuing in some form.
There hasn't been any sort of official news on that front as of yet, but Dreamworks may well be holding off until after awards season as an Oscar win would be a great launching platform for a sequel announcement. Either way, Shrek 5 definitely feels one step closer to becoming a reality.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is now playing in theaters.
