PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH Manages To Slice Down BLACK ADAM At The Worldwide Box Office

It's been more than a decade since we've seen Puss in Boots on our screens, but Puss in Boots: The Last Wish proved to be more than worth the wait. The animated sequel has received rave reviews and already earned an Oscar nomination for "Best Animated Feature," an award we'd argue it deserves to win.

The movie has exceeded expectations at the box office, and just passed Black Adam in what can only be described as another embarrassing defeat for the former pro wrestler Dwayne Johnson's anti-hero.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has earned $158.5 million in North America and $235.2 million internationally for a global total of $393.7 million. Black Adam, on the other hand, grossed $392 million before its run in theaters ended, and Dreamworks' animated sequel is expected to surpass $400 million this weekend.

Black Adam isn't the only major title it's sliced down to size, though, because the movie will also pass the worldwide grosses of Dune and Eternals in the coming weeks.

The Shrek franchise spin-off is only the third animated movie of the pandemic era to cross $150 million in the U.S., with Minions: The Rise of Gru ($369.5 million) and Sing 2 ($162.8 million) finding similar levels of success. Interestingly, all three were released by Universal Pictures, and the studio is now finding greater success in theaters than Disney and Pixar!

This time last year, no one could have ever imagined Black Adam would be clawed down by a movie like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, but the DC Comics adaptation massively underperformed. Despite inaccurate claims from Johnson about the movie's profitability, it was a huge flop, likely explaining why the character won't be joining the DCU for the foreseeable future.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is now playing in theaters.
