With a renewed focus on original films, Pixar's
Onward looks to become the next blockbuster from the studio. Getting the spotlight as part of today's D23 panel, Disney revealed a new poster and still image from the animated fantasy adventure, which stars Tom Holland and Chris Pratt as a pair of elven brothers who embark on a quest to discover some real magic.
Pixar's Pete Doctor also shared a few more plot details about Onward, which is directed and co-written by Dan Scanlon. Fans in attendance were also treated to a sneak peek at the film, which laid out the overall premise.
Brothers Ian (Holland) and Barley (Pratt) Lightfoot live in an modernized version of a fantasy world. The adventure begins when their mother, Laurel, presents them with a magical staff from their late father. With the help of a spell, the staff is able to bring him back for just a day - and while it doesn't work at first, Ian does eventually manage to conjure enough magic through a spell to bring back his dad from the waist down (as seen in the image below). The magical gem at the top explodes, but Barley is able to communicate with their father just long enough to learn that if they can replace the stone within 24 hours, they might be able to see him in his entirety once again. Thus begins their adventure to find a replacement for the Phoenix Gem.
In addition to a sneak peek which laid out the premise of the film, Disney also released a new poster and still image.
Onward arrives in theaters on March 6, 2020.
