It's been a decade, but apparently DreamWorks is finally letting this kitty play once again. Puss in Boots is returning to the theaters in a brand-new sequel film to his 2011 spin-off outing, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
First appearing in Shrek 2, the kitten donning a pair of boots was instantly pushed to the forefront of fan-favorite characters thanks to his charm, accent, and that adorable face. In 2011, he was even given his own spin-off movie, which found itself a generally positive reception and even won some awards.
Even so, it wound up going nowhere with only his continued appearences in the Shrek franchise -- which is still supposedly being rebooted by Illumination -- keeping the feline alive. That said, it wasn't always like that with talks and even confirmation of a sequel as far back as 2014, only for it to get scraped thanks to DreamWorks' restructuring.
The story of this decade-long awaited film is still up in the air, but it will retain its previous cast including Eternals' Salma Hayek alongside Antonio Banderas, who's fresh off the Uncharted train, playing the role of the main feline. Harvey Guillén also makes his debut as the canine companion of the two.
In the backend of things, Illumination CEO and founder, Chris Meledandri, will be taking up the executive producer role. Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado are the director and co-director respectively and Mark Swift acts as their producer.
Luckily, we probably won't have to wait too long for more info as there's a debut trailer dropping on Tuesday.
