Superman: Doomsday, a loose adaptation of The Death of Superman storyline was actually the first DCUAO film, launching the line back in 2007. However, that film was only loosely inspired by the comic.
All-Star Superman also dealt with the Man of Steel's impending demise but that was an adaptation of the 2005 comic book series from Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely.
This July, a true adaptation of the Death of Superman will be delivered by WB Animation for the first time. Appearing on DC All Access, Executive producer James Tucker admits as much, citing the fact that the new film will be set in the newly-established ongoing continuity of the current era of DCUAO films.
Check out a clip below, which was the final segment from this week's DC All Access. The video starts at that point, but if you're interested in learning about the new creative team taking on Wonder Woman, you might want to start from the beginning.
The Death of Superman will have its world premiere at SDCC on July 20 before going on sale at select digital retailers and OnDemand on July 24. Blu-ray and DVD copies arrive at brick-and-mortar retailers on August 7.
The second part of The Death of Superman storyline, Reign of the Superman, will also be receiving an animated adaptation that will be released in 2019.
