The animated Mortal Kombat Legends franchise has become a hit with fans of the video game franchise and another instalment, titled Cage Match, is set to be released later this year.

The series kicked off in 2020 with Scorpion's Revenge, while Battle of the Realms and Snow Blind later followed.

This instalment will be helmed by Ethan Spaulding, while Jeremy Adams - who penned the previous three instalments - returns as screenwriter. Rick Morales, meanwhile, once again serves as supervising producer.

In terms of the confirmed cast list, we're sure you'll agree this makes for impressive reading:

  • Joel McHale (Community) as Johnny Cage
  • Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing) as Herself
  • Dusan Brown (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) as Chuck Golden
  • Grey DeLisle (Teen Titans Go!) as Kia
  • Robin Atkin Downes (Constantine - The House of Mystery) as Shinnok
  • Zehra Fazal (Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe) as Jataaka
  • Gilbert Gottfried (Aladdin) as David Doubldy
  • Kelly Hu (X2: X-Men United) as Ashrah
  • Matt Yang King (Elemental) as Concierge
  • Phil LaMarr (Futurama) as Brian Van Jones
  • Matthew Mercer (Resident Evil: Death Island) as Director/Bully
  • Dave B. Mitchell (Call of Duty) as Raiden
  • Armen Taylor (Justice Society: World War II) as Master Boyd

Yes, you read that correctly: Jennifer Grey and Gilbert Gottfried really are part of Cage Match's cast!

"Neon lights... Suits with shoulder pads... Jumping from explosions in slow motion... In 1980s Hollywood, action star Johnny Cage is looking to become an A-list actor," reads the synopsis. "But when his costar, Jennifer, goes missing from set, Johnny finds himself thrust into a world filled with shadows, danger, and deceit."

"As he embarks on a bloody journey, Johnny quickly discovers the City of Angels has more than a few devils in its midst. He faces off against a sinister secret society plotting a nefarious scheme, but the brutal fight against the bloodthirsty warriors of the Netherrealm is just beginning."

"Can Johnny, alongside other Kombat legends, save humanity...and, more importantly, his career?"

You can check out a first look at Johnny Cage in action below, and it looks like the movie will definitely have a lot of fun with 1980s-inspired imagery.

As noted, Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match is set to be released later this year.

Man this one must of been delayed or something if Gilbert Gottfried is doing a voice in it. Also... wasn't the last Mortal Kombat movie set in the future and now this one is in the past? Is this like connected to the previous movies and is a prequel or part of it's own continuity? I really hope it's the later as they really should just do more one off basing the movies on specific characters or events related to MK without having to tie them to like other films so you can just have characters come back without having to explain it if they died in previous films or anything.

Setting it in the past with Cage starting his film career? That's awesome, though I'm not sure they played Cage as being in his 40's during the first couple of movies (covering MK1-2) and I'm fairly sure they took place in the 00's, if not modern time, not the 90's. That said, I'm not sure this films are supposed to be in the same continuity and could just be telling random stories with the more popular characters.

Hopefully a Lin-Kuei film is next, the Sub-Zero brothers, Cyber-initiative and Frost provide plenty of meat for them to bite into, could even make a show out of it if they wanted to.
