Chris Williams, the co-director of Disney’s Moana, will be directing and writing a new CG-animated film for Netflix titled Jacob and the Sea Beast. This will be William’s first stand-alone project as director.

Williams, who previously worked for Disney on many of their animated films including Big Hero 6, Frozen, The Emperor’s New Groove, Moana, Bolt, and Mulan, released a statement discussing his excitement about the project and partnering with Netflix:

Jacob and the Sea Beast is the kind of story I’ve always wanted to take on. It’s a tale of high adventure where our hero leaves the known world and ventures out into uncharted waters. As it turns out, I’m doing the same thing. I’m grateful for the opportunities provided by my former creative home and am excited to leap into a new environment. I feel a great energy at Netflix, as amazingly talented artists from a wide variety of backgrounds are coming together to build something new.”

The official synopsis for Jacob and the Sea Beast posted on Netflix is as follows:

“In his mission to stop a tyrannical captain and save a kidnapped infant, charming seafarer Jacob finds an unlikely ally in a sea monster.”

Netflix plans for the feature film Jacob and the Seabeast to be sailing our way by 2022.
