This summer, the sequel to Minions, Illumination's billion dollar spinoff of the Despicable Me series, will explode into theaters. Anyone familiar with these adorable yellow henchman probably already knows to expect some wacky and wild hijinks, but in case a reminder is needed, Illumination has released a first look teaser for Minions: The Rise of Gru.
Arriving ahead of the full trailer on Wednesday, the teaser gives us a sneak peek at some of the action, bad guys, snacks, tighty whities, explosions, jet bikes, nuns, nunchucks, chest hair, yoga, pilots, Tupperware, and kung fu featured in the sequel. Even though it's just a glimpse of the full trailer, Illumination's signature humor is on full display in the teaser.
Minions: The Rise of Gru will tell the "untold story of one 12-year-old's dream to become the world's greatest supervillain." That, of course, is in reference to Despicable Me's leading reformed super-villain. In addition to the teaser, Illumination shared a poster for Otto, one of the new minion characters introduced in the film.
Minions: The Rise of Gru is directed by returning franchise filmmaker Kyle Balda (Despicable Me 3, Minions) with co-directors Brad Ableson (The Simpsons) and Jonathan del Val (The Secret Life of Pets films). It's produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and his longtime collaborators Janet Healy and Chris Renaud.
Minions: The Rise of Gru hits theaters on July 3, 2020. Check back on Wednesday, February 5 for the full trailer.
