According to a new report by Variety, Disney are interested in casting Melissa McCarthy in their upcoming remake of 1989 animated classic The Little Mermaid.
The comedic actress is reportedly in early talks to play the role of Ursula. This character is an evil sea witch and thereby the villain of the film. Being in one of Disney's animated classics, she's one of the most iconic villains that the House of Mouse have to offer. McCarthy is known for her roles in
Ghostbusters,
Spy,
The Heat,
Bridesmaids, and countless other comedies.
Prior to these reports, there were rumours that Lady Gaga (
A Star Is Born) was up for the role of Ursula. If the afformentioned reports about McCarthy are anything to go by, it seems that Gaga's talks with Disney either never happened or never came to fruition.
Last year, there were multiple claims that Zendaya (
Spider-Man: Far From Home, The Greatest Showman) was up for the titular role of Ariel. The actress stated that she hadn't had any discussions about the live-action remake of
The Little Mermaid, but would lovd to play the role.
Rob Marshall is attached as director and Lin-Manuel Miranda will write original songs for the film - you'll know that pair for their work on
Mary Poppins Returns. It's said that the iconic songs of Alan Menken from the original The Little Mermaid film will also be used in the remake.
