Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is in theatres now. It's a sequel to 2013's Maleficent and sees Angelina Jolie reprise the role of the iconic Disney villainess. As well, Elle Fanning reprises her role as Princess Aurora. However, the new film also introduces some new faces such as Michele Pfeifer's Queen Ingris.

Suffice it to say, Maleficent and Queen Ingris don't get on too well and their squabble quickly escalates into a war between humankind and fantasy creatures such as ents, fairies, and much more. The scene which begins the pair's rivalry is probably the most tense one that features in the movie.

Recently, the director of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Joachim Rønning paritcipated in a Vanity Fair video in which he breaks down this scene. Rønning provides insight into what went on behind the scenes and points out the techniques they used to pull of the escalating tension.

Below you can check out the breakdown video as well as an official clip of the scene in question:

The years have been kind to Maleficent and Aurora. Their relationship, born of heartbreak, revenge and ultimately love, has flourished. Yet the hatred between man and the fairies still exists. Aurora’s impending marriage to Prince Phillip is cause for celebration in the kingdom of Ulstead and the neighboring Moors, as the wedding serves to unite the two worlds. When an unexpected encounter introduces a powerful new alliance, Maleficent and Aurora are pulled apart to opposing sides in a Great War, testing their loyalties and causing them to question whether they can truly be family.
