The new
Space Jam starring NBA superstar LeBron James has often been referred to as a sequel to the original 1996 film that featured NBA legend Michael Jordan. Well, as it turns out, James' version may not be a sequel after all.
According to ESPN,
"a source familiar with the production told ESPN's Dave McMenamin that James' vehicle will not be considered a sequel to the highest-grossing basketball film of all time."
If that's the case, then James' version can be considered a remake or a reboot. However, it's also reported that the premise of this new
Space Jam "is not rooted in the original story."
Based on what James has said recently, it sounds like his version - directed by Terence Nance
with Black Panther's Ryan Coogler on board as a producer - will aim to be more than just a box office success. Speaking to
The Hollywood Reporter, James revealed he's hoping the movie can inspire and empower children to not give up on their dreams.
Production on LeBron James'
Space Jam is slated to begin in 2019 during the NBA off-season. No release date has been given yet.
