Nobody could've predicted
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle's success back when it initially released back in December of 2017. The action-comedy went up against a mainline
Star Wars movie and still managed to perform incredibly well at the box office — almost topping $1 billion.
Sony Pictures are once again pitting a
Jumanji film up against a
Star Wars one with
Jumanji: The Next Level — which is in theatres now!
The sequel earned $19.4 million during its opening day which means that it will likely earn $52.4 million during its entire opening weekend (via
Gamefragger). To put that into perspective,
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle only earned $35 million during its opening weekend.
The action-comedy sequel now sits at the #1 spot on box office charts. This means that
Frozen 2 now resides in second — having held onto the top spot for quite some time and almost earned $1 billion.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be arriving in theatres on December 19th and, considering the popularity of the science-fiction franchise, will likely take the top spot away from
Jumanji.
In Jumanji: The Next Level, the gang is back but the game has changed. As they return to Jumanji to rescue one of their own, they discover that nothing is as they expect. The players will have to brave parts unknown and unexplored, from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains, in order to escape the world’s most dangerous game.
