After more than a decade of waiting, moviegoers can once again return to the fairy tale universe of Shrek in the spin-off Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Universal Pictures' latest animated film by DreamWorks Animation arrives in theaters this week on December 21, 2022 in the United States.
Arriving just in time for the holidays, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a family-fun adventure starring the fiercest feline in the fairy tale world. The sequel to 2011's Puss in Boots sees Antonio Banderas reprise his role as the titular character on a journey into the Black Forest to find the mythical Wishing Star in hopes of restoring eight of his nine lost lives.
Accompanying him on his grandest quest yet is his former partner and nemesis Kitty Paws, voiced by Oscar nominee Salma Hayek Pinault. They are joined, against their better judgment, by a ratty, chatty and relentlessly cheerful mutt, Perrito (Harvey Guillen). The trio of heroes will try and stay one step ahead of the villainous Goldi (Oscar nominee Florence Pugh) and the Three Bears Crime Family, Jack Horner (Emmy winner John Mulaney) and terryfing bounty hunter, the big, bad Wolf (Wagner Moura).
Ahead of its theatrical debut, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has received rave reviews from critics. The film currently sits at a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, although we're still awaiting the critical consensus.
If you're looking for something fun to do with the kiddos during the holiday break, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish certainly seems like a movie worth going to see. But what if you prefer to watch it from the comfort of your home? Is Puss in Boots: The Last Wish simultaneously streaming anywhere?
Unfortunately, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is only showing in theaters, so you are unable to watch it on any streaming service right now. We also don't know exactly when it will come to streaming services. The rights deals for Universal Pictures' films are a bit confusing, but here's what we know so far.
With the ongoing pandemic Universal had been sending films to Peacock as early as 45 days after their theatrical release. This new model began with Universal's 2022 slate of films, although major tentpoles weren't always included. We do know that Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will eventually come to Peacock, but we don't know when exactly. If it were to arrive in 45 days, then we're looking at early February. I suspect it will ultimately depend on how the film fares at the box office.
It's also worth noting that when Puss in Boots: The Last Wish does come to Peacock, it will only be available on the streaming service for the first four months. After that, it will head to Netflix.
In 2021, Netflix and Universal agreed to a multiyear deal that would continue to allow the streaming platform to host Universal's animated films from Illumination and DreamWorks Animation. With how the deal works out, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will be available to stream on Netflix four months after the film debuts on Peacock. It will remain on Netflix for the middle 10-month portion of the 18-month pay-one partner window.
Following its Netflix run, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will then return to Peacock for the remaining four months of that 18-month window.
To sum it up, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish could arrive on Peacock in as early as 45 days. When it does come, it will remain there for four months before heading to Netflix where you'll be able to watch it for the next 10 months. After Netflix's window, it will return to Peacock for another four months. Until then, your only way to watch it is in theaters.
