No one expected the first Hotel Transylvania film to be a hit, however, the 2012 3D animated comedy went on to gross $358.4 million worldwide, from a budget of just $85 million.
The sequel opened in 2015 and performed even better, grossing $473.2 million worldwide, from a production budget of $80 million.
Three years later, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation is set to open in U.S. theaters on July 13 and is tracking for a mid-$40M debut. By comparison, the first film opened to $42.5M and the sequel took $48.4M in its first weekend. If Sony managed to keep the film's production budget in the $80M range, they're likely looking at another installment that grosses 4.5-6x it's budget.
