Following the immense success of HBO's adaptation of the A Song Of Ice And Fire series of books, plans are underway to bring George RR Martin's other works to the big screen. Warner Bros. has secured the rights to the novel, first published in 1980, and intends to develop it as an animated feature film.

Set in a land of frigid snow, The Ice Dragon is about a young girl and the ice dragon she befriends after the death of her mother.  Her friendship leads to the ice dragon defending the girl's world from fiery dragons on a summer day.

George RR Martin is onboard as a producer. His manager Vince Gerardis is the executive producer while Warner Bros. Animation Group chiefs Allison Abbate and Chris Leahy are overseeing the project for the studio.

Martin has pointed out that The Ice Dragon is not set in the same world as Westeros in A Song Of Ice and Fire.
